💨 Fart Drawer 💨

The drawer is OPEN. Close it! 👀

Farts: 0

No Makey Makey yet? Press and hold the drawer picture to close it.

đŸŽ™ī¸ Record your own fart sound

Make your best fart noise (with your mouth! 😂) and the drawer will play it.

Now playing: surprise built-in farts 🎲

🔌 How to build it

You need: a Makey Makey, the USB-C adapter, 2 alligator clips, aluminum foil, tape, and a drawer.

Drawer OPEN = quiet đŸ¤Ģ

gap!

The two pieces of foil don't touch, so the circuit is open. No sound.

Drawer CLOSED = 💨

💨 foil touches!

The foil on the drawer presses on the foil on the cabinet. The circuit is closed. FART!

  1. Plug the Makey Makey USB cable into the USB-C adapter, then plug the adapter into the iPad. A little light on the Makey Makey turns on.
  2. Fold a piece of foil a few times to make a thick strip, about as big as your finger. Make two of these.
  3. Foil #1 goes on the drawer. Fold it over the top edge of the drawer front, so it covers the top and goes down the back side (the side that bumps into the cabinet). Tape it down.
  4. Foil #2 goes on the cabinet. Fold it over the top front corner of the cabinet, right above the drawer hole, so it covers the top and goes down the front. Tape it down. Close the drawer and check that the two foils squish together.
  5. Clip SPACE (the round spot on the front of the Makey Makey) to foil #1 (the drawer). Leave the wire a little loose so the drawer can still open.
  6. Clip EARTH (the strip along the bottom) to foil #2 (the cabinet).
  7. Tap this page once so the iPad is listening. Then open the drawer and close it. 💨

Not farting? The clips have to bite the foil, not the tape. Tape over the edges of the foil so the shiny middle is still showing. A little crumpled foil ball makes a bump that touches better.
Farting when it's open? The two clips or foils are touching somewhere else. Keep them apart.
Close the drawer gently and keep fingers out of the way! đŸ–ī¸

🔧 Sound not working?

Tap each test button. Did you hear it?

Heard đŸŽĩ but not 💨? The iPad is in Silent mode (see #1 below). Videos and Spotify still play in Silent mode, but game sounds don't.

Didn't hear either one? Check the volume and Bluetooth (#2 and #3).

Check these on the iPad

  1. Silent mode (the usual problem!). Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen. If the 🔔 bell is crossed out, tap it to turn sound on. (Older iPads with a little switch on the side: flip it so no orange shows.)
  2. Volume. Press the volume-up button while you're on this page.
  3. Bluetooth. Make sure the sound isn't going to headphones or a speaker in another room. In Control Center, tap the AirPlay icon on the music box and pick iPad.
  4. Microphone (for recording). In Safari, tap aA or the page menu next to the web address → Website Settings → Microphone → Allow. If the iPad uses Screen Time: Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Microphone → Allow Changes.
  5. Headphones too quiet? Settings → Sounds → Headphone Safety → Reduce Loud Audio (Screen Time may lock this one).
  6. Still stuck? Reload this page, tap the screen once, and try the tests again.
